According to The Local Italy, heatwaves are pushing some travelers toward cooler destinations instead of the Mediterranean, but that does not mean Italy is empty this week. Rome, Florence and Naples are still hot and crowded at midday. Sightsee early morning or early evening, take a break from 1-4pm, and head for Lake Como or the Tuscan hills if the heat gets to you. Skip the midday line at the Colosseum and do a sunset walk instead.

The Local Italy reports Italian motorways get busy this week, especially Friday afternoons and Sunday evenings, as domestic summer holidays kick in. Renting a car means expect delays on the A1 (Milan-Naples) and A14 (Bologna-Bari). High-speed trains between Milan, Florence, Rome and Naples are the steadier option. In city centers, park outside the ZTL and walk or take public transport.

Sunday 26 July is a free-entry day at state museums and archaeological sites, including the Uffizi, the Colosseum and Roman Forum, and the Accademia. Expect long queues, arrive at least 30 minutes before opening, or try a quieter pick like Palazzo Grimani in Venice or Capodimonte in Naples. Free entry covers only the permanent collection, not temporary exhibitions. These dates shift month to month, so confirm on the museum's official site before you go.

Practical tips for the rest of summer

• Carry a refillable bottle. Italian cities have free public fountains (fontanelle).
• Book accommodation with air conditioning. Many budget places in historic buildings do not have it.
• From roughly August 1-20, small shops and family-run restaurants often close for holiday. Big cities and major sights stay open.
• Late September or October still brings warm weather with thinner crowds.
• The Amalfi Coast and Cinque Terre offer sea breezes, book ferries ahead. On Sardinia and Sicily, stay near the coast, inland heat runs high.
